Light of Eärendil & Shadow of Mordor
Shadow of Mordor and Light of Eärendil are two counteracting stats introduced with Update 21 (the Mordor expansion). Getting these right before stepping into the Plateau of Gorgoroth — or into any of the Mordor instances — is one of the most important preparation steps you can take.
What Is Shadow of Mordor?
Shadow of Mordor is an environmental effect present across all of the Plateau of Gorgoroth. Its intensity varies by location: it is weaker along the main roads and grows stronger as you venture deeper into Mordor. Certain encounters within instances also apply their own Shadow of Mordor aura on top of the ambient level, increasing the effective Shadow even further for all players in range.
What Is Light of Eärendil?
Light of Eärendil (LoE) is a stat provided by gear. It does not grant bonuses on its own — it exists purely to counteract Shadow of Mordor. You can obtain items that grant LoE from:
- Drops from enemies in Mordor
- Quest rewards throughout the Plateau of Gorgoroth
- Bartered gear using Motes of Enchantment
- Drops from the Mordor instances (see the Abyss of Mordath, Court of Seregost, and Dungeons of Naerband guides for specific drops)
Important: Hope Tokens have no effect on Shadow of Mordor. Only Light of Eärendil gear counts.
The Effective Shadow Bar
When you enter a Shadow of Mordor area, a gauge appears beneath your character's Morale and Power bars. This is your Effective Shadow indicator.
- White portion — your current Light of Eärendil rating
- Purple portion — the current Shadow of Mordor strength in the area
The Effective Shadow is the difference: Shadow of Mordor − Light of Eärendil. If your LoE is equal to or greater than the ambient Shadow, your Effective Shadow is zero and you suffer no debuff. The moment Shadow exceeds your LoE, the debuffs begin.
The shadow debuff aura — a purple swirling cloud around your character's legs — is visible only to you, not to your fellowship or raid group.
Innate Light of Eärendil (Level 116+)
Starting at level 116, characters gain a base amount of innate Light of Eärendil that scales with level:
| Level | Innate Light of Eärendil |
|---|---|
| 116 | 20 |
| 117 | 40 |
| 118 | 60 |
| 119+ | 80 (cap) |
This 80 innate LoE carries through to maximum character level and is always active. You still need gear to push above 80.
Effective Shadow Debuff Tiers
An Effective Shadow rating above zero inflicts a stacking debuff that worsens every 10 Shadow levels (up to a maximum of 10 increments). Each increment is signalled by a brief purple screen flash.
Note: Incoming Healing reduction affects all healing received, including potions and food.
| Effective Shadow | Tier | Incoming Healing | Incoming Damage | Outgoing Damage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1–10 | Shadow of Mordor I | −5% | +10% | −5% |
| 11–20 | Shadow of Mordor II | −10% | +20% | −10% |
| 21–30 | Shadow of Mordor III | −15% | +30% | −15% |
| 31–40 | Shadow of Mordor IV | −20% | +40% | −20% |
| 41–50 | Shadow of Mordor V | −25% | +50% | −25% |
| 51–60 | Shadow of Mordor VI | −30% | +60% | −30% |
| 61–70 | Shadow of Mordor VII | −35% | +70% | −35% |
| 71–80 | Shadow of Mordor VIII | −40% | +80% | −40% |
| 81–90 | Shadow of Mordor IX | −45% | +90% | −45% |
| 91+ | Shadow of Mordor X | −50% | +100% | −50% |
At Tier X you receive double incoming damage and deal half outgoing damage — this is effectively unsurvivable in any serious content.
Mordor Instance Requirements
The three Mordor instances each run at set Shadow levels. The "suggested" figures account for on-encounter Shadow auras that push effective Shadow above the ambient baseline — always aim for the suggested number, not just the bare minimum.
The Abyss of Mordath
A 12-player raid fixed at level 115, with 2 tiers.
| Tier | Minimum Area LoE | Suggested LoE |
|---|---|---|
| T1 | 150 | 170 |
| T2 | 200 | 220 |
The extra buffer (20 LoE above minimum) is needed because the bosses Sagróg and Fingar apply their own Shadow aura during their fights. Falling short here during a boss Effective Shadow spike moves you straight into Tier I or II debuff territory, reducing healer throughput exactly when you need it most. Gear sets such as the Abyssal armour pieces and Black Adamant-socketed jewellery are the primary ways to reach these values.
See the full Abyss of Mordath guide for boss mechanics and loot tables.
The Court of Seregost
A 3-player instance that scales from levels 105 to 160.
| Tier | Suggested LoE |
|---|---|
| T1 | 150 |
| T2 | 200 |
The final boss Lhaereth applies a persistent Shadow debuff to the room during her encounter. Her lieutenant Dulgabêth the Broken also applies burst Shadow effects. Maintain your LoE buffer especially before pulling the final two bosses. The instance rewards Expedition's Vanguard gear and Black Adamant from both Lhaereth and Dulgabêth's chests.
See the full Court of Seregost guide for detailed encounter breakdowns.
The Dungeons of Naerband
A 6-player instance that scales from levels 105 to 160.
| Tier | Suggested LoE |
|---|---|
| T1 | 150 |
| T2 | 200 |
Naerband is home to some of the harshest trash encounters in Mordor — especially Spitpyre (32 abilities, fire + Shadow combination) and Thraknûl (24 abilities). The deeper dungeon sections apply environmental Shadow on top of encounters, making this the most unforgiving of the three instances if your LoE is borderline. Boss drops from Gumog and Thraknûl include Expedition's Vanguard armour pieces and Black Adamant.
See the full Dungeons of Naerband guide for boss strategies and loot.
Tips for Managing Shadow
- Stack LoE on every jewellery slot first. Rings, earrings, and bracelets all have LoE variants. These are the fastest wins as they require no armour set bonuses.
- Socket Black Adamant wherever possible. Black Adamant is a guaranteed drop from every boss chest in all three Mordor instances and can be socketed into Mordor-tier gear for LoE.
- Motes of Enchantment are Mordor's primary barter currency. Use them to fill gaps in your LoE coverage that drops haven't addressed yet.
- The innate 80 LoE at level 119+ means you only need gear to cover the rest. For T1 (150 minimum) you need roughly 70 more from gear; for T2 (220) you need roughly 140 more.
- Check your bar before each pull. If an ambient aura is pushing your Effective Shadow into any debuff tier before a boss even starts, you will be in a worse tier for the actual fight's aura on top.
